Pierce The Veil

Pierce the Veil is an American post-hardcore band from San Diego, California. Formed in 2006, the group was founded by brothers Vic and Mike Fuentes after the disbandment of the group Before Today (formerly Early Times), which was formed out of the San Diego punk rock scene. Other members of the band include Tony Perry (lead guitar) and Jaime Preciado (bassist and backing vocals). Pierce the Veil has released three studio albums and has continuously been inducted into several worldwide tours since the release of their debut album, A Flair for the Dramatic in 2007. The band released their second full-length studio album, titled Selfish Machines in 2010. Their third and latest album, Collide with the Sky, was released on July 17, 2012, and is their first album under the major record label Fearless Records.

Early years and A Flair for the Dramatic (2006–2009)

Pierce the Veil was founded by Mike Fuentes and Vic Fuentes in 2006,[5] after the disbandment of Before Today. The brothers continued to write songs together and eventually came up with enough material for a new full-length album. Still backed by their label, Equal Vision Records, they wrote and recorded an entire album on their own in Seattle, WA with Producer Casey Bates. The brothers released the album A Flair for the Dramatic on June 26, 2007 under a new name: Pierce the Veil, which is derived from a song off of Before Today's album, A Celebration of an Ending. Soon after, Pierce the Veil acquired new members Tony Perry (guitar) and Jaime Preciado (bass). The song "I'd Rather Die Than Be Famous" from this album was featured in the game Tony Hawks Proving Ground.[6]
Pierce the Veil toured vigorously for about 3 months after the release of A Flair for the Dramatic. They have toured with bands such as A Day to Remember, Chiodos, From First to Last, Emery, The Devil Wears Prada and Mayday Parade. In November 2007, Pierce the Veil performed one date on the Vans Warped Tour 2007, and were on the entire tour in 2008. They also played the Bamboozle Left in 2008. Their first headlining tour, called The Delicious Tour, which took place in October–November 2008, featured Breathe Carolina, Four Letter Lie and Emarosa. They ended their record cycle with the Taste of Chaos 2009 tour along with Bring Me the Horizon, Thursday, Four Year Strong and Cancer Bats.
Vic and Mike Fuentes with Ayrton Jara confirmed to be included in the new project and supergroup Isles & Glaciers, featuring vocalists Craig Owens of D.R.U.G.S. and Jonny Craig of Dance Gavin Dance and formerly of Emarosa.[7] The "supergroup" released its first EP titled The Hearts of Lonely People on March 9, 2010. However Isles & Glaciers has broken up, saying "Isles & Glaciers was only a one time thing".

Selfish Machines (2009–2011)

During August 2009, Pierce the Veil announced that they were currently in studio recording new material for their next album. After a few months off the road and building anticipation for their sophomore release, the band moved to Los Angeles to record their most recent album Selfish Machines with Producer Mike Green. Singer and lyricist Vic Fuentes stated, "The title refers to human nature and the animal-like qualities inside all of us that we try and hide, but should just learn to accept. We are all selfish machines and we all have natural tendencies to want, love, and take." Selfish Machines was released on June 21, 2010 under Equal Vision Records and made it to No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. In support of the release, the band played a number of festivals including Bamboozle Left, South by Southwest, Never Say Never Festival, and the Vans Warped Tour. The band also contributed a cover of Blue Öyster Cult's classic song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" to the Punk Goes Classic Rock compilation, released on April 27, 2010. They were a part of the Take Action Tour with Attack Attack! that went to New Zealand and Australia, and also played on the Versus Tour in Japan with Confide. They played the "This Is a Family Tour" with Emmure, In Fear and Faith, Of Mice & Men, and Attack Attack!, which lasted until late December 2010. Pierce the Veil also played at the Fox Theater in Pomona as a surprise appearance as part of the Alternative Press Tour 2010 with bands such as August Burns Red, Bring Me the Horizon, Polar Bear Club, Emarosa, and This Is Hell. On November 1, 2010, the band announced that they will be kicking off 2011 touring with Silverstein, Miss May I, The Chariot, and A Bullet for Pretty Boy on the "Winterizer Tour". Throughout March and April, "The Gamechanger's Tour" with A Day to Remember, Bring Me the Horizon, and label mates We Came as Romans followed. They also co-headlined the second leg of Escape the Fate's headlining tour "The Dead Masquerade". After taking the summer off to spend some more time on writing new material, the band was supposed to head out on their first ever South American Tour supporting Sum 41 in September; however, due to illness of Sum 41's frontman, the tour was cancelled. They finished up the year touring Europe with blessthefall and co-headlined the No Guts No Glory Tour with Miss May I afterwards. They once again contributed to an "Punk goes..." album, Punk Goes Pop 4, covering the song "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars, which was released on November 21, 2011.

In order to promote the album, the band appeared on the Vans Warped Tour from June, 16 to August, 5, 2012, playing the event's main stage for the first time. They were regularly joined on stage by Kellin Quinn to perform King for a Day together.

Fearless Records

Fearless Records is an alternative rock-oriented record label that has been signing artists since 1994.[1] Fearless is based in Westminster, California and are best known for their early pop-punk moments captured in the Fearless Flush Sampler and Punk Bites releases, as well as additional releases by bands such as Bigwig and Dynamite Boy, and later Sugarcult, Plain White T's, The Aquabats, and post-hardcore releases by At the Drive-In.[2] However, the label has experimented with different styles in recent years. Acts like Blessthefall, Tonight Alive, Mayday Parade, Breathe Carolina and The Maine have showcased post-hardcore and alternative bands that have emerged in recent years. Fearless Records' releases are currently distributed nationwide by RED Distribution, Alternative Distribution Alliance and East West Records.[3]

History

Bob Becker started Fearless Records when he was selling his friends records at their shows. He would also go to record stores and put their records on consignment. The record label name came from Bob not knowing what he was doing at the time and "not being afraid to jump in head first."[4] Fearless Records was officially formed in 1994.
In 2000, Fearless Records released Punk Goes Metal, the first compilation album from the Punk Goes... series. Since then the Punk Goes... series has expanded. It has included five Punk Goes Pop releases, two Punk Goes Acoustic releases, Punk Goes 80's and 90's, Punk Goes Crunk, Punk Goes Classic Rock, and Punk Goes X which features cover songs that were featured at the 2011 Winter X Games. Their newest release Punk Goes Pop 4 was released on November 21, 2011.
In 2005, Fearless Records released the studio album All That We Needed by Plain White T's, a thirteen-song collection that proved to be a breakthrough for both the label and the Illinois-based band. "Hey There Delilah," a single from that album, debuted at #1 on Billboard Hot 100, became a success for the label and was certified as a multi-platinum single.
On November 8, 2010, Fearless announced the release of a Christmas-themed compilation album, titled 'Tis the Season to Be Fearless. It would feature eight of their signed artists recording original songs. The album was available for pre-ordering on iTunes the same day, and was released on November 22, 2010.[5]
In 2011, Fearless Records released Breathe Carolina's album Hell Is What You Make It. "Blackout," a single from the album, became another success for the label. It debuted at #32 on Billboard Hot 100 and was certified as a gold single.

History

Rise was founded in 1991 by Craig Ericson in Nevada City, California. He released a small number of 7" records before putting the label on hiatus to attend college.[1] Ericson didn't release anything further until 1999, after moving to Portland, Oregon.[1] He began issuing small-print 7" records, and his first CD release came in 2000, from the group One Last Thing. The label gave a strong foundation to bands Anatomy of a Ghost, Ever We Fall who later signed with Hopeless Records and Fear Before the March of Flames who signed to Equal Vision Records. Later signees, including Drop Dead, Gorgeous, Breathe Carolina and The Devil Wears Prada gained considerable popularity while with Rise, and moved on to larger labels such as Interscope Records, Fearless Records and Ferret Records, respectively. Abandon All Ships

Abandon All Ships is a Canadian Metalcore band from Toronto, Ontario. Formed in 2006, the group is currently signed domestically to Universal Music Canada via Underground Operations, along with an American deal to Rise Records and its imprint Velocity Records. The band has since released a self-titled EP independently in 2009 and two full-length studio albums, Geeving in 2010 through Universal and Rise, and also Infamous in 2012.

Formation and Disband (television show) (2006–2009)

Abandon All Ships was founded in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, originally playing covers of Norma Jean songs. Most of the band members attended Dante Alighieri Catholic Secondary, including lead vocalist Angelo Aita, keyboardist Sebastian Cassisi-Nunez, and original guitarist David Stephens. All band members are of Italian descent. The three just started the band to play gigs and their career escalated from there. By 2008, the band released four demo songs online, which were "Megawacko", "When Dreams Become Nightmares", "Brendon's Song" and "Pedestrians Is Another Word for Speedbump". These demos featured a heavy mathcore influence (especially "When Dreams Become Nightmares"), which differs highly from the band's current post-hardcore / electronicore style. After rising in the Toronto scene, the group eventually toured and opened for many larger bands in their same genre or home country such as Silverstein.
Abandon All Ships widely were thought to be a Christian band, but this is controversial due to the band's regular use of profanity and suggestive lyrics in their songs and eventually settled the debate that while a majority of the members are Christians, the band is not a Christian band. Abandon All Ships quickly became popular on the Internet through Myspace, and were noticed even more after their appearance on the MuchMusic's television program Disband early-on in their career.[3]

Geeving (2009–2010)

In early 2010, the group was signed to Underground Operations, Rise Records, and Velocity Records. They released their first single, "Take One Last Breath" formerly "Pedestrians Is Another Word for Speedbumps" on June 29, 2010; the music video premiered online the same day.[4] They played at the 2010 Bluesfest in Ottawa, Ontario. At the festival they played some new songs, including "Geeving", "Guardian Angel" which features Lena Katina from the Russian band t.A.T.u.. "Maria (I Like It Loud)", and their first single "Take One Last Breath" all were to be featured on the then-upcoming album, Geeving.
The single "Megawacko 2.0" was released on iTunes on August 24, 2010, along with the music video premiering on MuchMusic that same day. By September of that year, "Bro My God" also premiered with online streaming. Abandon All Ships with their increasing popularity were then included on the Monument tour from October 29, 2010 to December 5, 2010 with Miss May I, Sleeping with Sirens, The Crimson Armada, and Bury Tomorrow.[5]

Departure of the Paiano brothers, Infamous

On January 24, 2011, lead guitarist, Kyler Browne left the band. Browne left a note on his Facebook profile stating: "I have left AAS due to my own personal reason's having nothing to do with anyone in the band personally. The guys are all brother's to me however my heart was not in it anymore. I thank you all for all the love and support and I wish you all the best."[6] Taking Browne's place is lead guitarist Daniel Ciccotelli. Abandon All Ships participated in the 2011 Vans Warped Tour for selected dates on the east leg.[7]
On July 14, 2011 the Paiano brothers, Andrew (rhythm guitar) and Daniel (drums), parted ways with the band.[8] At first, it was unclear exactly what led to the departure of these members, but it was later revealed that they were kicked-out as opposed to it being their choice as not continuing as a part of the group.[9] The remaining members explained "Well if you haven't already heard the news, Andrew and Dan Paiano will not be continuing in Abandon All Ships due to personal reasons I would not like to touch upon at this point and time. We wish them the best of luck with whatever they do in the future. As for Abandon All Ships, we will without a doubt be continuing the band." Shortly after the incident, Andrew was invited to join Velocity Records labelmates Woe, Is Me as lead guitarist, an invitation which he accepted, with Daniel coming in as the band's drum tech.[8]
On January 18, 2012, the band announced that they are in the process of recording their second studio album. The title was announced as Infamous, and it was released on July 3, 2012.[10] The video for its title track was released on the first of May with its environment and direction being described as "very Toronto".[11]
Abandon All Ships played on the Scream It Like You Mean It tour around North America. In September they headed out on a tour around Canada in support of We Came As Romans, also played will be Skip the Foreplay and Ice Nine Kills. After that they immediately headlined their own tour around Canada with support from Fall City Fall and Skip the Foreplay.

Musical style

Abandon All Ships is primarily a post-hardcore and metalcore band with the traditional screamed vocals, usually performed in an emo style, and also features auto-tuned clean vocals. The band, which essentially plays in an emo style, are also considered to have an emo appearance. Along with their heavy punk influences, they infuse elements of electronic music, most notably electropop, electro, trance, synthpop, dance-pop, and even dubstep. In songs like Take One Last Breath they play more technically, giving their usual metalcore atmosphere more of a mathcore sound or effect. In some of their "softer" songs, for example, "Strangelove" from their Geeving album and "August" on their Infamous album, they incorporate Broda's auto-tuned voice (even more than they usually do) in a rapping style giving the songs more of a sense of hip-hop and R&B, and give a rest to their usual styles of metalcore, and post-hardcore.
The song "Geeving", title track for their Geeving album, features un-discovered rapper Jhevon Paris rapping the line "I don't give a fuck I just came to PARTY!" The song "Infamous", the title track for their Infamous album, features the Canadian rap duo A-Game.

Christianity label

Although having Christian themes in the band's music as a regular feature, Abandon All Ships is not a Christian band. Also notably is that despite including these Christian themes in their music, the band's lyrics also frequently feature profanity. In addition, the name of their album, "Geeving," is taken from the Urban Dictionary definition of the word,[12] which directly reads "Couldn't care less. Don't give a shit. Leave me alone. Fuck off. Happy Thanks Geeving."[13] Furthermore, vocalist Angelo Aita has commented that the title track to Geeving is "about not giving a fuck."[14]
